Huge Step Towards Marriage Equality: SCOTUS Strikes Down DOMA, Punts Prop 8
Today the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), a federal law that recognized marriage only between one man and one woman. The Court also declined to rule on California’s Prop 8 case meaning the Supreme Court let the lower court’s ruling stand, and same-sex marriages should be legal again in California starting very soon.
This has been a long, hard-fought road, and we are by no means done yet. But for the thousands of same-sex couples in states that have marriage equality, and for the thousands more in states like Georgia, this is a massive victory in the march towards equality.
Let’s join our friends and allies by celebrating this historic moment.
